Retired Chief Judge Donald P. O'Connell has over 30 years of experience successfully mediating complex personal injury and commercial cases.

Since the onset of the pandemic, Judge O'Connell has been successfully settling cases through the use of Zoom technology. Judge O'Connell has devised a fool proof method of maintaining confidentiality of communications via Zoom with no risk of a breach of that confidentiality.

Successfully Mediating Complex Tort and Commercial Cases

After Donald P. O'Connell stepped down as Cook County's Chief Judge, his services as a private mediator remain in high demand.

Since leaving the bench, he has successfully mediated over 6000 cases.

"In every case, the mediation is driven by the facts and the law," O'Connell says. "The job of a mediator is not to run numbers back and forth" between the parties.

Donald P. O'Connell is recognized as among the top mediators in the State of Illinois.

In addition to routinely conducting mediations in catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases, Judge O'Connell recently mediated all plaintiff cases relating to the Turkish Airlines crash near Amsterdam, all plaintiff cases relating to the Lion Air crash in Indonesia, all plaintiff cases in the Chicago John Hancock high rise scaffolding disaster, all plaintiff cases related to the Cook County Administration Building fire, and all plaintiff cases in a Rhode Island circus high wire rigging failure.

Judge O'Connell also routinely mediates construction defect cases. The most noteworthy was the multiple day mediation relating to the O'Hare Airport terminal renovation involving in excess of 15 defendents.
